Important Notice to Drive in Japan (For International Travelers)

International Driving Permit

Visitors from overseas who wish to drive in Japan are required to show “International Driving Permit” under Geneva Motoring Convention, as well as their Passport, or Japanese driving License. Failure to present Passport and International Driving Permit, the customer shall be refused rental even any reservation has been made.

Only international driving permits issued by registered countries and conforming to the model contained in the convention at Geneva are valid in Japan.

International Driving Permit must be shown followings

  • 1. A name of countries registered in the Convention at Geneva 1949.
  • 2. The International Convention relative To road Traffic signed.
  • 3. A name of countries registered in the Convention at Geneva 1949.
  • 4. nternational license is valid for one year from the date of issue.
  • 5. Stamped by authenticated organization

Even though international driving permits issued by the registered countries, they are invalid in Japan if they are conforming to the model of the Convention at Vienna or other Convention.
Holders of domestic driving license issued in Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium and Taiwan, formal authenticated Japanese translation must be required.
